160/514 Good Things

Today was a tough day for America. We knew the outcome of this "trial" before we entered into it, but it doesn't make it easier to take. We have seen a party willing to do whatever it takes to maintain control. It feels like we can't beat them. The Empire has built a Death Star too large to destroy. The Yankees have made it to the World Series, yet again. The Patriots are in the Super Bowl...again...But remember: The Death Star was destroyed. The Yankees don't make it to the World Series every year, and where are the Patriots this coming weekend? Watching the game from their living rooms with the rest of us.

Today was rough. Remember the anger and the sadness for November. It is our duty, as the GOP has failed in theirs, to right this wrong. To be the bringers of what is due to those who voted against a fair trial. We can and must fix this.

So, what was good about today? I think this is very good and inspirational news. Keeping this story alive in our minds is important as we get further into this election year. Making the arts accessible to everybody, is important. I for one, cannot wait to see this!

155/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: This amazing woman is helping her community, employing people who might not otherwise find employment, and is helping the environment. All because she had an idea and put it into action. I love this so much!

151/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: My work day ended in a pretty horrifying way today, but I'm still home safe and sound. There are several people who aren't going to be home safe in their beds tonight. Since a lot of the victims of tonight's shooting downtown were homeless, I chose this story. In spite of terrible violence, terrible things I saw, I still choose to focus on the good.

150/514 Good Things

150 days of good things!! And the good things just keep coming! Today's good thing: Cancer death rates seem to be slowing down somewhat over these last few years. Better technology and treatment and detection are all adding up to lives saved. This is definitely a good thing!

149/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: Bookmark this link. Check it often. Especially when the politics starts to get overwhelming and you think you can't handle it anymore. It will get worse before it gets better, but one year from this date, we will be partaking in Inauguration Day. Who will be inaugurated, remains to be seen, but we have to keep hope, and encourage each other to get out there and vote, even when people around us are telling us it doesn't matter or they're not going to participate if their candidate of choice isn't the nominee. I have to hope that there will be more of us hopers, than tantrumers, in the end. One year left...That's a good thing...

148/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: Strides are being made to remove styrofoam from meat packaging in stores. I can't wait for this to be standardized!

147/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: A while back, I posted about how AI can be used to detect wildfires. Here's another good thing it can be used for. There are a lot of assumptions being made about the terrible things that will come of AI, but what if there are good things that can actually come of it?

146/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: Young people are capable of doing incredible things, and capable of so much love and compassion. See what one child is doing to help with the fires in Australia, and take inspiration from him!

145/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: While it's sad that such a facility needs to exist at all, I'm very glad it does. More schools should have facilities like this to help students who face homelessness.

144/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: This might not have planetary implications, but for one dog, it's everything. At long last, a forever home!

143/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: Something good happened to the kids in this story, and they passed on that goodness to something that really needed it. Tonight, I am missing my sweet Snow White, but this cat gets to enjoy its new forever home...!

142/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: As I listen to Christmas music and watch the snow falling outside as a way to come down from watching Supernatural too close to bedtime, I feel this is the perfect story for today! Christmas doesn't have to end after the holiday!

141/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: This is a twofer. Reusing something that would normally end up in a landfill or fireplace, and helping veterans! This is definitely a win-win here!

140/514 Good Things

Today's good thing is this gem of a Netflix show. Anne With An E. I just spent a self-care day watching the last of season two and the entirety of season three and am now bereft that it's over. Sadly, the show won't be going on after this third and final season, but I cannot recommend it highly enough.

As an avid LM Montgomery and Anne Shirley fan, I was nervous about a new version that wasn't the 80's movies, which in my opinion, are the epitome of Anne of Green Gables. Would it deviate from the stories? Would it be just a carbon copy of the 80's movies? What was the point? Why mess with perfection? The answers to my questions were: yes, a lot; no, not at al; the point is that the story this show tells is what Anne would have been like had the books been written today; the perfection of the movies remains untouched, this is its own world completely separated from them.

The show deviates from the books greatly, but in the best way possible. It doesn't even try to touch the movies, but there are connections to them in the actors playing some of the roles, and the behind the scenes people. When I saw those connections, I knew it was in good hands.

The good this show generates, is incredible. The story it tells is told in such a beautiful way, and they found ways to make it far more inclusive than the books ever were. Anne was ahead of her time, and this show really delved into the ways in which that was true. The casting is perfect. I love everything about this show.

I highly recommend this to any Anne fan out there. Yes, it will not be by the book, but there are plenty of book moments in it. Yes, it has some darker moments, but you can infer almost all of it from the books themselves.

Anne brings a light into the world that is sadly lacking in today's times. It's time we remember that there is still so much scope for imagination here, and that there are ever so many kindred spirits around us. We only need to look out for them.

139/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: There is so much that can be done with food waste that can be beneficial for this planet. And sometimes it's fun too!

Thursday, January 9, 2020

138/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: So many Muslims are still looked at with hate, fear, and suspicion, that it's nice to see stories like this. It's tragic to see the devastation of the fires in Australia, but it's heartening to see people from all walks of life coming together to help combat them.

137/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: Berkeley is making a good start in reducing single coffee cup use. Living in a town known for it's coffee, this interests me a lot. It's time for all of us to stock up on a reusable cup/lid combo to take with us to coffee shops.

Tuesday, January 7, 2020

136/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: There are a lot of good people helping to fight the wildfires in Australia. Here is a team of Indigenous women doing what they can to help.

135/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: Finland has had good results helping end homelessness in their country. I wish our country would adopt some of these ideas too...

Sunday, January 5, 2020

134/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: Some company's chocolate is about to get a little sweeter as they take stronger strides to eliminate child labor from their processes. Hopefully this isn't behind a paywall for readers. I tried to find a source that would work for everybody, but WaPo was the only one reporting it.

Saturday, January 4, 2020

133/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: Should people work to solve the world's climate problems without a reward? Probably. But does getting a reward motivate people to do more? Absolutely. Whatever it takes to get people out there trying to fix the world's issues, I'm all for it!

Friday, January 3, 2020

132/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: Britain had some major bad moments last year, but apparently clean energy was a bright spot for them! I wish our country would do more to produce clean energy, maybe Britain can lead the way.

131/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: There are a lot of scary and upsetting things going on right now, and it's easy to focus on them and shut down. This is when it's more important than ever to look for good things in the world. It's not "looking on the bright side" or being in denial of what's happening, it's about reminding yourself that even in the worst moments, there is still good. There will always be something good. And it's ok to celebrate it, embrace it, focus on it. There are a lot of people who will benefit from today's good thing, and I am very happy for them!

130/514 Good Things

Today's good thing: This is a good reminder that sometimes we have to get involved. And always pay attention to people. I'm glad the people in this story listened to the woman they helped. I shudder to think what might have happened otherwise.
