Today's good thing is this gem of a Netflix show. Anne With An E. I just spent a self-care day watching the last of season two and the entirety of season three and am now bereft that it's over. Sadly, the show won't be going on after this third and final season, but I cannot recommend it highly enough.
As an avid LM Montgomery and Anne Shirley fan, I was nervous about a new version that wasn't the 80's movies, which in my opinion, are the epitome of Anne of Green Gables. Would it deviate from the stories? Would it be just a carbon copy of the 80's movies? What was the point? Why mess with perfection? The answers to my questions were: yes, a lot; no, not at al; the point is that the story this show tells is what Anne would have been like had the books been written today; the perfection of the movies remains untouched, this is its own world completely separated from them.
The show deviates from the books greatly, but in the best way possible. It doesn't even try to touch the movies, but there are connections to them in the actors playing some of the roles, and the behind the scenes people. When I saw those connections, I knew it was in good hands.
The good this show generates, is incredible. The story it tells is told in such a beautiful way, and they found ways to make it far more inclusive than the books ever were. Anne was ahead of her time, and this show really delved into the ways in which that was true. The casting is perfect. I love everything about this show.
I highly recommend this to any Anne fan out there. Yes, it will not be by the book, but there are plenty of book moments in it. Yes, it has some darker moments, but you can infer almost all of it from the books themselves.
Anne brings a light into the world that is sadly lacking in today's times. It's time we remember that there is still so much scope for imagination here, and that there are ever so many kindred spirits around us. We only need to look out for them.
